a healthy weight, you know that it can be a difficult
challenge. While some face the daunting task of
losing 10, 20 or even 30 pounds, others stare at a
seemingly insurmountable weight loss goal—perhaps
100 pounds or more.
Carrying 100 extra pounds is called morbid obesity, and
according to weight loss surgeon Leslie Cagle, MD, there is
a reason it’s called morbid—it shortens people’s lives.
There is an option, however: weight loss surgery.
Consider this method to help you reach your ideal weight,
improve your health, and reclaim your life once and for all.
IS IT RIGHT FOR YOU?
Ideal candidates for weight loss surgery have:
A bodymass index (BMI) of 40 or more, or a BMI between
35 and 39.9 as well as a serious obesity-related health problem.

CONSIDER THE OPTIONS
“Various operations can help people lose weight, but all
involve making the stomach smaller,” explains weight loss
surgeon Paul Dally, MD. “That limits the amount of food it
can hold and allows a person to feel full sooner.”
Types of surgery include:
Roux-en-Y laparoscopic gastric bypass.
During this
surgery, a small vertical stomach pouch with a capacity of
less than 1 ounce is created. Then a bypass of most of the
stomach and some of the small intestine is constructed.
Adjustable Lap-Band or Realize Band.
The
adjustable band is a silicon band placed around the

stomach. It creates a small pouch that holds about 2
ounces of food at a time. The adjustable gastric band is also
placed around the uppermost part of the stomach. The
upper pouch can hold about 4 ounces of food at a time.
The openings in both procedures can be adjusted to let in
more or less food. It is also reversible.
Gastric sleeve.
The sleeve is the latest advance in
weight loss surgery. A large portion of your stomach is
removed, and the smaller stomach limits the amount of
food you can eat by making you feel full after only eating
small amounts of food. This procedure cannot be reversed.
“Each option is minimally invasive, allowing you to
quickly return to your daily activities,” says weight loss
surgeon Jay C. Jan, MD.
